They were beginning to leaf out, so we knew we wanted to get them in the ground right away.
We dug the holes deep and added lots of compost and mulch along with an organic cold climate fertilizer. Then we filled the holes with water a couple of times before putting the trees in.
When we had them all planted and well watered, we put up a fence to keep the deer out.
But the fence didn't make it through the first visit by the deer. I am going to work on it now to make repairs. We have been told that deer will not walk on metal fencing that is put flat on the ground - we were going to try that but then we pictured some poor deer running around dragging the fencing on it's hoof!!
And yes, it snowed here last night...

Well, it seems those deer may be a bigger problem than I'd planned for them to be. Too bad because they really are cute. Apparently they're also persistant.
You always know how to get a great bargain. Fortunately deer don't like our cliffs. Last fall we transplanted two cedar trees that we had in pots on the deck. We are happy to see that both made it through the winter and are greening up and have new growth already starting. We have two more that will go in the ground next year, but for now they give us a focal point on the front deck. - Margy
Don and I have to put fences around every tree we plant. Eventually, we're going to have a LOT of 6 ft steel posts!! Tractor Supply loves seeing us come through the door!

So neat! Thanks for reminding me.. I STILL haven't ordered my grapes and filbert trees. Its going to get hot before I get those babies in, better do it today. :)
Time, tide...and, planting...wait for no man! Just when I thought my planting was finished for a few days, the blackberry and raspberry shrubs arrived, today! It's so hot, right now, that I'm going to wait until morning. But, it will be worth it.
