As we push through November, most of us are not eating any lettuce out of our gardens. Have you ever noticed a lag in the quality of lettuce you buy this time of year? As you make your holiday menu plans you might think about where that romaine you will be enjoying came from. Out west, we mostly get our romaine from California or Arizona. But what does it take for us to enjoy it? Entire lettuce operations are moved by truck between Salinas and Yuma in a matter of just a couple of days. They are taken apart bolt by bolt, with equipment loaded onto trucks and driven almost 600 miles to be unloaded and re-built so processing can resume. This happens twice a year, once in the spring and again in the fall. What a luxury for us to be able to just go to the store and purchase it! This article is a very interesting read - check it out. You could be the most lettuce knowledgeable diner at your Thanksgiving table this year!!!

I don't have lettuce in my garden, but my ruby red chard and curly kale are still doing well. With a little lettuce from the store to mix in, they make a great salad, and I can pick them fresh as needed. Love that! - Margy
