Is there hope?

Living in the high desert of Oregon means dealing with extreme temperature swings any time of the year. We haven't put out plants yet - not in the garden, flower beds or pots.

This is our lace leaf maple - a specimen planting for us here. It was leafing out very nicely and the other day I found it like this. The temperature at night dipped into the low 20's a couple of times this past week. Could this be frost damage? Or has our poor plant just given up? Any advice is welcomed here...

We probably should never have gotten one of these. The deer like the foliage and we have to wrap it with fencing to protect it from them. But we just don't give up!
