The sad saga of the lonely eggs...

There will be no baby finches in the little nest with the four tiny blue eggs outside our front door.  The mother finch sat on her eggs for three days and then she disappeared.  We were very careful to steer clear of the area so as not to startle her.  We never saw her mate around - she seemed to be all alone.  And she needed her mate - he was supposed to feed her while she sat on the eggs until they hatched.

We are very sad about the lonely little eggs and have wondered what happened to her.  Chucky partially answered that question the other day when he pointed out a little female finch body down in the rocks near the pond.  Perhaps she was taken by a hawk or maybe she was ill.  We will never know and the eggs will never hatch...

Oh no, that is very sad. I was looking forward to reports from you on the progresses of those baby birds. Chucky you were a big help.

I'm thinking if she was taken by a hawk there wouldn't be enough left of her to find. Too bad about the eggs though. :(

Oh, so sad. Nature can be cruel. I was looking forward to a picture series on the little ones.

Birds near our homes become so close to us, don't they. Sorry to hear about the abandoned eggs and lost mother. - Margy
