Last night when we came home from being away for a night, we thought for sure that we would have something in one of the traps. Well, we had something but it wasn't in one of the traps. There was a little mouse/rodent/critter sitting sort of splayed out on the tile floor in the kitchen. It looked quite dead - until I really stopped to look at it... It was still breathing... We had to save it - it wasn't in a trap. Tramp 1 got gloves and a paper bag to take it outside it and I got water for it. He took care of everything and placed the little guy under a tree. But when he checked on him later, he was dead.
We don't know what happened to the little fella. Only one trap was sprung and there were no legs chewed off so we know he did not get caught in it. The only thing we can figure is that when it snapped he was somehow knocked out and got some sort of injury. Why can't they just get snapped properly? I don't do well with the live mouse thing... Nor with the half alive mouse thing...

Have you tried Live traps for the litter critters. Only a couple of draw backs; you have to check the traps regular so they don't dehydrate/starve and you take them well over half a mile away for release to stop them picking up their little knapsacks and heading back to your home. Some may laugh at this way of removing critters like these but it works for us over here as I try not to kill anything that I'm not going to put in the pot (and have you tried getting enough mice for a decent meal?)
Regards,
John
The poor little thing probably died from shock, which is very common for small prey... I never could stand finding a little critter in a trap and I'm not sure what the answer is, because I don't want them running around in my food, either…

Ahhhhow precious. The two of you caring for one of God's creatures. Reminds me of blueberry picking and coming upon a dead bird. Had to give it a proper burial in our front yard. I suspect one of our cats got it and then decided not to present it to us at the sliding door. Last time that happened my Dad did not see that Kitty Kitty had a bird in her mouth! Take care, Treesong
I wonder how my little critter(s) is doing? Having used bait I am sure he crawled somewhere difficult to reach before he expired. Like Murphyfish mentioned, we would have preferred to use our live trap, but leaving for a week just didn't leave that option open this time. If he reads this comment, he might be amused that we take our captured mice and woodrats on boat rides across the bay to live on an island. Don't know for sure, but I don't think they try to swim back. - Margy
