We are just about set to have our deck on the house replaced. It was built by the original homeowner and we have been fortunate that it has managed to stay attached for this long. We are working with a contractor we have not used before but came with good references from friends and we like him - that part is big. Tramp 1 wanted to do the work but with his back and shoulder issues, no way!
Having just finished going through the replacement of the roof on the house and the shop just a couple of weeks ago, it is hard to wrap my arms around more people spending the day outside my windows. We still need to finalize things by picking the brand and color of composite decking and decide on a railing system. I met with the contractor yesterday and he gave me the bids and the contract. He hopes to start on Monday weather permitting... And now my dreams have begun...
I woke up around 2:00 AM from a frightful dream. In my dream, I looked out the window and the contractor was nailing all the new boards on top of the old support system. I know that he is not going to do that but I still woke up pretty upset. I got up and went out to the family room and fell asleep on the sofa there. Then I dreamt that a big dog or coyote was on the deck eating the meatloaf I had put out there to cool the other night. I woke up when I heard Tramp 1 closing the doors that divide the family room from the great room before he started the gas stove to heat up the house. He didn't even know I was there until I said good morning! He thought I was in the guest room as the door was shut there. I got up and headed for the coffee to start my day.
Just after Tramp 1 left for work the phone rang. A phone call that early usually is trouble and I thought oh, no, who died... It was just Tramp 1 calling to say that he forgot it was garbage day and I would need to get the can out to the road pronto. He was so apologetic but I sure don't mind doing it. In fact, it was just daylight and there was a cool rain gently falling. When it rains here all the juniper trees smell so fragrant - a very clean and refreshing scent. I took deep breaths of the fresh air and counted my blessings as I drug the garbage can behind me. A good way to start the day.
Just one thing... When I was pulling on sweats to take the trash out, I realized that I had my nightgown on inside out! I think I must need to get more sleep so I notice things like this earlier! Everything is on right side out now! (I slept great at the beach last week!)
How about you? Are you getting enough sleep? Any good sleep tips?

I'm sleeping TOO good. Cripes, I never slept more than 6 hours in my life. Now I put flannel sheets on the bed, and look out-8 or NINE hours!!!!!!
You got something on your mind, perhaps?
My sleep is always broken. I never sleep more than 2-3 hours at a time. I sometimes get up and do housework or blog when I can't sleep. I don't nap in the daytime either. Guess I just don't require many hours at a time. You must look forward to the refreshing clean smell after a rain. It sounds wonderful.
I've been so tired lately, that I've been collapsing into bed at night and sleeping soundly- something I rarely do. I think it's a combination of exhaustion and still getting over what we assume was H1N1.
But generally- I don't sleep. 6 hours a night is usually a great night for me and I'm always awake before 7, even on a weekend. But when I was sick- I slept for 12 hours straight! Whoosh!

Have you considered a ramp for the deck? Instead of stairs?
