Wine and BBQ

The weekend that kicked off the beginning of our vacation started with a trip to the Horse Heaven Hills near Prosser Washington. We were headed here to McKinley Springs Winery.

We were at the winery as judges for their annual McKinley Springs BBQ Showdown and Benefit. Proceeds are donated to Operation BBQ which welcomes our troops home with a family BBQ.

We were able to dry camp in our RV on site - this was the view from our camper. Nothing much for miles but grapes and hearty farm families.

As judges, we aren't allowed to mingle with the competing teams during the competition. So the back of the event is pretty much all we see for that time period.

At the end of the event when all the scores have been tabulated prizes are awarded. These BBQ teams travel long distances and really work hard under all kinds of weather conditions with an eye on the prizes but mainly for the great time spent with friends and to share their love of BBQ.

As the wind blows, the crowds thin out and we all pack up with plans to return next year.

If you find yourselves anywhere near Prosser and the Washington wine country, be sure to seek out McKinley Springs Winery - a small family owned and operated winery - for some beautiful views and fine wine tasting.
