We ordered this truck in 1997 after a few years of deliberation. (Yes, we aren't good at making decisions, especially such a costly one) It has been a wonderful vehicle, getting us everywhere safely and comfortably. And now it is headed into to town to the Ford dealership for diagnostics and repair. Whatever it is, it involves something that is making a squealing noise like a bad bearing in the fan belt area - at least that was how it started. We would have driven it in to be repaired but the brakes have stopped working, too. Sounds like some sort of compression issue. We only have some 85,000 miles on it which is just barely broken in for a diesel.
Things to be thankful for - it broke down in a safe place rather than up in the mountains with a camper on it, towing motorcycles on a holiday weekend or vacation!

Oops, sorry your favorite truck is sick. I like your attitude that 85,000 is barely broke in. Your my kind of person. My husband starts wanting to trade cars once they get about 50,000, by 75,000 he declares the car is not safe to drive, at 100,000 we stop speaking and I reluctantly give in to buy a new one.
Your hubby wouldn't like it here - our other truck is a Toyota - we bought it new - it is 21 years old and has somewhere around 300,000 miles on it. It is the original motor and we are still driving it - it never breaks down... My Suzuki Sidekick is pushing 150,000 miles - probably more since we bought it used and it had been a tow vehicle for RV travel.
We felt the same way when hubby's 95 Ford F150 started having problems. Amazing how much sentiment we attach to our vehicles. We weren't able to save ours. It was like losing an old friend. I hope yours in on the mend soon.
Ahhh the life we live eh? Due to the top bolt rusting, thanks to the Oregon rain over the years, my car door on the driver's side is half off. Therefore I have it bunged to the car frame and I am climbing in and out on the passenger side. Wonder if that horse wagon/buggy thing would be an option???

Bummer..but best it happened this way....our work truck is a Dodge diesel..93 I think with 275.000 miles....keeps on ticking..thank goodness

I got my 1998 GMC 4X4 used three years ago. It has been a perfect vehicle for our town and off-road adventures. It has been to the shop several times, but fortunately is hasn't been too costly, except for the window repair after a break-in and a windshield replacement after a rock fractured it beyond repair. Each of those was under my high deductible. All those insurance payments and no payout. - Margy
Car trouble is such a drag. I am with you, 85,000 is almost new :) All of our cars (Husbands, mine, and the two kids) are way over 100,000. Hope it isn't a costly visit to the car doctor and he is back home soon.

Sure looks to be in very good shape bodywise.
