I have been looking at other blogs this morning. There are so many blogs out there with great gardens.... Producing gardens.... Gardens where people are already harvesting things.... And here we are, working so hard to just get things to grow and to keep them going. It is really tough to not be envious of those of you who live in more temperate climates - and those that live where there is actually viable soil on your land. Yes, we compost - in fact, we haul green and brown material to compost here from property we have 150 miles away. Our compost pile is pretty large - we had a dump truck load of soil brought in a couple of years ago and we have been layering it with the green and brown matter. So far the compost has turned out well but it takes a season to get something good.
Another issue here at Tramp's Camp is the drip system - it is just not working right yet. And I have finally agreed to allow Tramp 1 under the house to replace the two frost free faucets that blew (I wanted him to hire a plumber). Maybe being able to run the system off the right faucet will help... We are short on pressure and I fear that there is a leak in one of the pipes in the garden area - and that would mean digging...
Lastly, we have had weather problems. Extremely wet and cool weather for way too long. We are finally having some sunny days again. But still not very warm at night. The paper this morning shows that it is going to dip into the low 30's tomorrow night. We may need to cover things to avoid frost damage. Time to get out the old sheets - especially for Tramp 1's grapes. They were just put in this spring and they already have a crop forming.
Guess I will head out into the garden and get to work. As Tramp 1 was leaving early this morning to go golfing with his buddies, he told me that he saw two blossoms open in the squash bed. I need to do some hilling up in the potato bed and there are still two more tomato plants waiting to be planted out back in the masonry block raised bed. And I need to add some mulch to the six buckets of upside down tomatoes that are hanging in the re-purposed dog kennel - they have fruit on! I am also going to put a nice big load of ribs on to smoke in the Traeger pellet grill. Tramp 1 rubbed them last night with a mix of our favorite rubs we make. It looks to be about 12 pounds of ribs - probably a good six hours of smoke time for them.
Time for another cup of coffee and a tour around Tramp's Camp this beautiful morning.

Hi, wanted to say thanks for popping by. I love your blog. Oregon is a truly beautiful state. We are heading back this fall to explore some more.
Sounds like your growing conditions are similar to mine in Michigan. Best of luck to you on all your gardening adventures!
:)
Sue
The ribs sound really good to me! May have to drop by for supper...
Yes, I have dragged compost to the new house too! Our soil isn't much of soil either--so compost will be my biggest friend too. Our first 2 tomatoes ripened with blossom end rot! UGH!!! inspite of having added lime when I planted them. :(
I'm going to do a foliar spray to hopefully fix it. I'm sure the rain just leached everything I put in that sandy soil right down the slope. The plants look good though-- so hopefully they won't all have this problem.
Every garden has challenges, but I do enjoy the weather difference here in the Carolinas--but boy we have the worst soil!
Sue,
Your gardens are sure good looking! We had frost here last night... Thanks for visiting!
Jim,
Wish you could have been here - it would have been a very interesting meal, for certain! And we had way too many ribs leftover...
Mary,
Good luck with the blossom end rot on your tomatoes. Gardening is a necessary challenge these days for most!
