Saturday we did a gardening marathon here. We were out working for 12 hours. Yes, we did have a break to eat and imbibe - an icy strawberry-lemon daiquiri was perfect in the heat! We had so much planting and transplanting to do, along with sporadic weeding. Tonight we need to test the drip system and hope for no leaks. Then we can start seeding some of the garden that has been waiting for rabbit fencing and water.
We sure were sore after all the bending, twisting and lifting. We have a massage chair that really helps - too bad it only seats one! Tramp 1 is first in line - he has had several back surgeries and his need is the greatest. We also need to avail ourselves of the hot tub we have. Heating up those muscles would really be good. So yesterday I added more water and chemicals to it and turned the heat up. But by the time we were ready to use it, it was raining. Speaking of rain, we have been having thunder storms daily and they are forecast for the entire week. The thought of lightning keeps us out of that hot tub! Beautiful to watch, but from inside the house!
A family of sparrows are nesting in a bird house in a juniper tree out front - we can hear their babies calling. So of course, the scrub jay is hot after them. He is very tenacious and is trying desperately to have a meal of english sparrow! When we hear their calls of alarm, we dash out and chase the offender away. But we can't be out there to do it all the time. Those two sparrows need to stand their ground and give the jay a good challenge.
Last night we were treated to a viewing of the great horned owl. It was perched at the highest peak on the top of our shop. We could hear the owlets out in the junipers calling back and forth. We had them here last year, too, and we really enjoy sitting outside after dark to listen to them.

I watched a pair of blue jays earlier this summer trying to upset a mockingbird nest-- I don't know how that went. The mocker chased them out of his holly tree and the holly hedge next to umpteen times and stood atop the tree singing usually afterwards--so I think he won. ;)
Even with the hard work and body aches that follow, it sounds that a wonderful place to be. I don't think there is anything more rewarding than spending time with nature. RAE
The birds provide great entertainment. Being outside working in the garden affords us the opportunity to really see them. And we like to check out all the plantings to see how they are growing - things grow very rapidly here. Very strange not to be worrying about the old dog sneaking off while we are outside. Sure do miss him...
I have heard owls at the cabin, but have never seen one. The calls come from deep in the forest. It's gardening time for sure. Lots of people are posting about it. I return to the cabin and know it will have grown a lot during the week I was gone. I know you miss your beloved dog. - Margy
