It is snowing again in Tramp's Camp. Such a wonderful thing, snow. It covers up all the projects that have to wait for spring with a pure white blanket that allows us to just relax and plan for later. We can also watch to see which critters are passing by. Friday I saw little Peter, our resident cottontail make several trips carrying mouthfuls of dry grasses to a spot under some shrubs where he was making another dry nest to enjoy. Do you think knew that snow was on the way? It started snowing Friday night...
Today we made a trip to town for groceries. We left early this morning and were treated to the sight of a bald eagle perched on a pole, waiting for his prey to scurry out into the open, being highlighted against the bright snow. Poor little critters - hard to hide with the snow. And there was a resident marsh hawk that we see regularly this time of year, along with the usual red tailed hawks. We also saw the fields of cattle at the ranches we drove past waiting patiently for the rancher to bring them breakfast. They were coated with fluffy white snow, all bunched up against the fence line. The horses are sporting their heavy winter coats and are able to actually make their hair stand up to form an insulating barrier against the cold. They seem to simply stand stoically, knowing that the weather will pass. We can't help but humanize them and feel that they must be cold. But the wild horses that live in the Ochoco mountains just east of us do okay in this weather, so we know that the horses we see should be fine, too. Of course, some of them are wearing coats - usually the older ones. We also pass by several ranches with donkeys that are so darned cute. It is a 25 mile drive to town and we always enjoy it - so much to see if you really look...
It is a happy time here for us this weekend. The old dog, Angus, has some serious back problems and they flared up Monday. Fortunately, we are able to realize now what some of his behaviors mean and I could tell that he was going down. He has been partially paralyzed once for several months and I became his rear legs 24 hours a day. We did not know if he would ever walk again - but he did! He has gone down a couple of time since then but always bounces back. I started him on prenisone and robaxin immediately and it worked. He is already almost weaned off the drugs completely and is doing well. Blessings abound!

It's tough when loved pets get old. Our cat is starting to have some kidney problems, but he is still hanging in there. He now lives with my 92 year old mother and takes really good care of her. - Margy
I really enjoyed reading about your snow and your dog. We don't have much snow here--sometimes I think I don't miss it, like the warmer weather--but then I see how pretty it is. :) Hope your dog hangs on a long time and then someday just rests. A really good dog is a once in a lifetime experience.
