Visiting Bonneville Fish Hatchery

On New Year's day while traveling home we made a stop here. I remember visiting this place as a child for a school field trip. Yes, it was much later than the visit by these two famous explorers.

Through the years the hatchery has grown with the placement of dams on the Columbia river. The hatchery sits just below Bonneville dam east of Portland Oregon.

It is much larger than I remember from way back! We were seeking the sturgeon viewing pond.

It looks like a house is underwater - it is a very clever sturgeon viewing building.

You go down a few stairs into the little "house" to view the sturgeon from below water level.

This big guy seemed very comfortable and interested in getting a peek at us, too.

Sturgeon are such incredibly prehistoric looking fish.

Some very large trout share the pond with the resident sturgeon.

The beauty of these fish is breathtaking.

As the sun was setting to the west we were back in the high desert headed towards home.

I love that that house looks like a regular house and then you go into a viewing area. How very cool!

That 'house' would make a really cute place to live xxx

This reminds me of the Cascade Streamwatch hubby and I stopped at in 2008. You could view salmon and other things underground. We loved it!
We'll put this on our "must-see" list for our next trip out that way. Looks neat!
