We are both finally at home after being gone another week. Fun for me at the Oregon coast, work for Tramp 1, flying around on business trips. We have added it up and in the past 24 days, we have only been home for 4 days. Needless to say, we are tired! And poor old Tramp 1 will be flying out again part of next week. I was going to go with him but I just want to stay home and play in the dirt. I have plenty of planting and potting, weeding and spraying waiting for me. So much of spring has been rushing in and we have missed it already.
This morning there were many different birds at the feeders. A pair of black headed grosbeaks were a real treat to see. And the lark sparrows are back, too. The quail have paired up and are visiting as couples. The doves are courting, too. The bluebirds seem to have selected a different bird house to raise their family in this year after using the same house for the past three years.
But the most special thing right now is the spectacular symphony put on by the toad chorus. They are in their mating cycle and they get louder every night. Big croaks, little croaks, ribbets, trills, you name it, they make the sound. We love it and are sleeping with the windows open even with the juniper pollen floating about. It is an event that happens but once a year and I would hate to miss it.
In the past, the toads have been the loudest up the buttes, then later they migrated to our location. This year they are a few acres down the hill from us. I think we lost them when we lost our sprinkler system and lawn a few years back due to an addition to the house. We hope to get some lawn in our back yard this year and that should help bring them back.
