When heading into town, I used to drive by a field with two donkeys. They were just the cutest couple of fellows and always made me smile. But this past summer one of the donkeys disappeared. I don't know what happened to him - hopefully he was just sold to someone else. His younger pasture partner spent a lot of the summer alone, looking very sad. But the other day on our way back from town we saw him running across the pasture to greet his new pasture mates - a bunch of cow/calf pairs brought in from the summer range for winter. He looked so darned happy to see them.

Hey, guys, remember me??

Come on, don't you remember me now??

Dumb old cows.... They all look alike.... Hmm, think I will eat something....
We think he thought they were the same animals that were with him in the spring. But they weren't - he was with a bunch of very large bulls. They should be coming back soon, too, with their work done for the year.
And yes, we are still sleeping outside...

What a touching post; made me kind of sad...but that is what life is all about. right?
That just goes to show you that animals like to be social with other animals.
First let me thank you for all the kind comments you have left about my dad...they mean the world to me. Now,,,I think I read somewhere that donkeys are very social animals..he needs to get another friend..someone is own size. xoxox
My neighbor has 8 donkeys--all rescue animals, and all so lovable!
You're so right--they do need friends, but maybe cows just aren't the answer!
:)
Awwww that's so cute. I love donkeys they are so dependable. Did you see Margaret is back with a big secret?
I just have to ask... What is the temperature at night where you are.?
It is supposed to be 20 degrees tonight. We are adding a down comforter on top of our sleeping bags with fleece liners. We use two pillows each to close any gaps and we have been sleeping better outside than indoors. But I don't think we will be out there too much longer - unless the weather forecast is wrong - 17 tomorrow night... You sure don't want to get up to go to the bathroom in the night!
The donkey had the same look on his face that Max the Wonder dog had every day when we had cats. He so wanted them to like him and pay attention to him. And every day he was disappointed. They hated him.
And there is NO WAY I could get HHBL to sleep outside when it is 20 degrees. I would enjoy it but then I am a 51 year old menopausal woman. Cold is good when I can get it.
When I was in elementary school, my best friend's parents bought a "ranch" in the high desert. It was mostly scrub plants, but they later did some dry farming of hay. They bought my friend Linda a donkey. But he was so feisty we never could ride him. He just munched his life away out in the fields. - Margy
