Meat in the HEAT....

Yes it was hot - pushing 100 degrees this past weekend in Yakima Washington. We made the trek there to judge BBQ at the Skewered Apple BBQ Championship.

As judges, we were corralled under this big canopy from 9:45 in the morning until we had tasted our last bite of meat around 3:00 in the afternoon. Oh, it was hot - and the meat was hot. Chicken, brisket, pork and ribs. Think how hot it was for the 67 BBQ teams that were cooking!!!

Trophies weren't the only thing up for grabs at this event. The top prize was $10,000 dollars. And the winner was - Smoke A Fat One from Snohomish Washington. He won this event last year, too. A very quiet and humble man that can really cook...

And yes, we were in wine country - but we didn't have time to do any tasting. When we weren't judging, we were in our motel room cooling off!!!

That must be fun as long as the weather cooperates. I've watched them on TV but never in person. That was a nice prize, but I bet there are lots of expenses just to compete: travel, products, time, people to help, etc. - Margy

I had no idea there was prize money like that involved. Wow!
They should give the prize judges something like that too for putting up with that kind of heat!

10,000 would be great but boy oh boy, judging a BBQ cookoff is just as good...better?
