The Old Sleeping Porch

In the days before air conditioning, homes were often built with a screened porch where you could sleep outside during hot weather. You have probably seen them in old movies. In my mind I picture Jimmy Stewart with the gang in "Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation" meeting up with "The Waltons". A big group of adults and kids trying to settle down for a cool night of sleep in bunk beds placed around a long screened porch that wraps around a friendly looking two story house. Just a dream... We live in a one story house without a screened porch...

But we still manage to sleep outside! And not in a tent or in our camper, but on our deck.

For the past week, we have been crawling in under the mosquito netting to slumber in the cool night air with the bubbling of the waterfall into the pond to lull us to sleep. It has been cooling down into the 40's at night, so we are using a down comforter to stay warm. The mosquito netting is hung from a copper rod that is part of the pergola we had built when we replaced the old deck. With the bed snugged up against the planter box, the afternoon sun warms the bedding and we are treated to a cozy nest when we go to bed at night. It has been quite delightful. Except for the night I got into bed in the dark and found a frog underneath me! Poor frog - I sent him flying and now I use a flashlight to check the bed each night.

Have you been doing anything unusual this summer?

That is just fabulous! I have to admit the last time I used a mosquito net it was in rural Uganda. If I had the right place to do this here in the Frozen Northeast Ohio I would so sleep outside.

Oh my gosh, that looks positively ROMANTIC. I love it. But yes, please, check for frogs (and other creepy crawlies). You just never know........

My first thought was this is fantastic. I have to have one.

And then I thought, but the critters like frogs can get inside from the bottom. However, for someone like me with critter phobia I think that problem could be easily solved. :) This is so cool!

I love it. Is there room for me?

I've threatened to sleep on our screened-in porch, but we're only 200 feet from the hard road, so I'm not sure there'd be enough quite to get to sleep or stay that way.

How wonderful and beautiful that is. It looks like a picture out of a magazine. I always said if I have a screened in porch I would sleep out there. I have one here in the mountains, but we also have bears. I sleep indoors.

That looks like a wonderful place to sleep. The view alone is amazing.

We have a screened-in porch and before it got too hot I would take afternoon naps there. When it cools down I might get brave enough to sleep out there at night.

That looks really cool (figuratively and literally). When we can, we spend the night on the boat either out at anchor or in the marina. Last night I had a "girl's night out" by myself on the boat. It was fun, even with the trains going by at all hours. - Margy

How romantic, not something that would be at all practical here in the UK with our rotten summer with all its rain. We would need an umbrella not a mosquito net!

I came here after you left the comment on my inspiration thursday posting about the outdoor sleeping area. I LOVE this that you did. It's an inspiration for sure. I love the idea of the use of a mosquito net. That solves a lot of the 'worry' about the outdoor part of it. Awesome place you have. Thanks for sharing!!!
