Mr. Peter Rabbit

This morning before Paul left for work, he spied our resident cottontail bunny, up in our bathtub garden dining on tasty treats. We have seen his handywork elsewhere in our plantings. He seems to have a penchant for marigolds - which we thought that most creatures avoided. The marigolds are probably his current treat due to their availability and the fact that we seem to have finally successfully fenced him out of our upper garden. He had been enjoying succulent young rhubarb leaves and tender fresh raspberry leaves. It took awhile to find the holes that he could squeeze through - it is amazing how small a space bunnies can make it through. We think we will have to replace the fence which is about two feet tall with three foot fencing but will wait and see how it goes. Sadly, just one unsupervised visit by Peter could take out a large part of our seedlings. He munched down most all of our newly sprouted beets, just 1/2 an inch tall. But he is so darned cute!! He has been a resident (we have seen no others) here for several years and a welcome change to the many jack rabbits that roam our acreage. Just a bit ago I glanced out through a curtained window and saw him on the stairs going up to our back deck. I was intriqued and continued to watch him to see where he was headed. Naturally I thought he was headed up to munch on my fuschias or hosta. But in the end, the little guy hopped up onto the deck and headed to our saucer fountain for a long drink of water. So cute!! When he was satiated, he hopped down and headed elsewhere. At least for this moment the plants on the deck have been spared. We do block the stairs with chairs so the brazen deer don't think they are welcome to dine there. We all have to live together amicably - we love the wildlife here!
